Dr Jonathan M. Flowers (NYU): genomics serving the date palm
The RAMD Date Palm Congress 2026 will welcome Dr Jonathan M. Flowers, Research Assistant Professor at the Center for Genomics and Systems Biology at New York University (NYU).
An international expert in plant genomics
Recognized in plant genomics, population genetics and bioinformatics, he devotes his research to date palm genetics. His contributions include genome-wide association studies (GWAS), whole-genome sequencing and molecular marker development.
His work has been published in leading journals, including Nature Communications and PNAS. He brings more than 20 years of research experience.
Molecular markers and fruit quality
His current research focuses on molecular markers associated with fruit quality and on sustainable date palm cultivation. In practice, these tools make it possible to identify traits of interest in a plant very early, without waiting several years for fruiting.
What genomics changes for the sector
- characterize and authenticate varieties, including Mejhoul;
- select on measurable quality criteria rather than late observation;
- document and preserve the genetic diversity of Moroccan palm groves;
- steer breeding programmes toward resilience and commercial value.
